Q. I want to sell my computer.
How can I make sure that all of my data is permanently removed from
the hard drive?
A. Comtek’s DiskEraser was specifically designed to remove the
entire content from your computer’s hard drive. With DiskEraser,
nothing is left to chance. All data will be removed and cannot be recovered
by any means.
Q. How long does it take to “wipe,” or erase
a drive?
A. DiskEraser is one of the fastest products of its type available
today. The time it takes to wipe a drive is dependent on many factors
including the size of the drive. DiskEraser will wipe most drives
at a rate of two minutes per gigabyte.
Q. Can I use DiskEraser to wipe more than one machine?
A. Yes, DiskEraser comes in three sizes: 10 wipes, 100 wipes and
unlimited wipes. DiskEraser can be used on as many computers as there
are wipes remaining on the disk. Each time a wipe is performed, a
counter decrements the remaining wipes left on the disk (the unlimited
version has an incremental counter.) When the counter reaches zero,
the disk will no longer function.
Q. How do I know that everything is truly removed from my computer?
A. DiskEraser has a “verify” feature that can be used
to read the entire content of the hard drive after the wipe is finished
to ensure that the data has been completely removed.
Q. Does DiskEraser comply with Department of Defense (DoD) 5220.22M
disk sanitizing standard?
A. Yes, DiskEraser was designed to comply with the DoD standard. The DoD 5220.22M standard states: “Non-Removable
Rigid Disks” (or hard drives) must be sanitized for reuse by “overwriting
all addressable locations with a character, its complement, then
a random character and verify.”
Q. Does DiskEraser run if the computer is turned off?
A. No, DiskEraser is a software tool that requires the computer
to be in operation during the wiping process. If the computer is
turned off, any data not yet wiped by DiskEraser will still reside
on the hard drive.
Q. What platforms does DiskEraser run on?
A. DiskEraser can run on any Intel-based PC (484, Pentium, and clones),
and is operating system independent.
